Importance of Literary Device1 – After Amir tells Baba about his schooling, Baba explains to Amir the importance of crime, and how every crime is a reflection of theft. This is an example of irony because later Amir finds out that Hassan is his brother,
and Baba robbed him of that truth. 2 – This metaphor shows the monstrosity of Assef. The name “ear eater” originated from a kid who had fought Assef over a kit and ended up fishing his right ear from a muddy gutter. 3 – This is an example of foreshadowing. Assef is warning Hassan and Amir that even though the conflict is over for the moment, he will fight them again someday. 4 - Amir has a problem with car sickness. Ever since he was a child he would get faint and sick. This simile exemplifies the extent of his car sickness. He gets dark spots between his eyes that he connects to as hand shadows 5 - Amir is stating how America is a gateway from his betrayal of his friend that he wishes to forget. This is ironic in a way because the longer he spends in America the more he realizes America is not a place to bury memories, but a place to unearth memories. The function of irony here is to illustrate the impact of America, and the motif of the immigrant, who begins with nothing to re-create a life in another country with all its hardships yet with all its hope. 6 - This quote shows irony in this story because of how in this quote it compares it to a man cured of a tumor but we later find out through the book he gets cancer. 7 - In this last quote he was being beaten by Assef when he stated this. Through this paradox we see how after all these years of being tormented with the guilt of betraying his friend he was finally getting the punishment for it and felt healed from the truth. |
